Rubber grommet

Grommets, be they rubber, plastic or made of some other material, serve a multitude of functions for the automotive industry. As with any automotive part, finding the right fit and type of grommet is crucial to the proper maintenance and function of your car or truck. This is particularly true of grommets used in conjunction with such a key component of an engine as the carburetor.

Automotive Uses

Grommets, usually rubber, are used in several areas of an automobile in addition to carburetors. Some of the more common areas grommets are used are as valve covers, the antenna assembly and firewalls. They are also used to seal filler necks (such as windshield wiper housings). Because automobile grommets are rubber, there is also the potential to fit them to your particular needs as they arise.

Carburetors

Grommets used for carburetors help to prevent leaks and improve the seal of components in and around the carburetor. Grommets also aid in reducing friction that can cause warping of metallic parts, and ultimately break down engines. A rubber grommet also acts as an insulator for hoses and wires running to and from a carburetor (and other engine parts), to help maintain a consistent temperature. Grommets designed for use in automobiles are built to withstand the high and fluctuating temperatures of a car or truck’s engine.

Customization

Grommets are available in large sets of varying sizes and shapes. If a grommet does not quite fit for the use you intend, they can be customized to do so. This may mean trimming edges or shaving some of the bottom to attain the proper dimensions. This may be the case when using grommets for shock mounts, on sharp or potentially dangerous areas on your automobile or for use as a valve breather (you would cut the bottom of the grommet off in this case).

Other Uses

While grommets have a number of uses with automobiles, including carburetors, there are a host of other uses as well. If a project requires punching holes in wood or metal, and subsequently running cables or wires through the holes, often grommets will be used to reduce chafing and damage to the wires. Grommets are also used on tarps, tents and other materials that require holes strong enough to run rope through and tie down.
